Help me build a simple example using AgentMail. Tell me how pricing works, and briefly tell me whether this product will be easy for you to manage. Let me know if you get blocked. If this product has no developer workflow you can act on, say so plainly and stop. Stay light: use the hosted product through its SDK or API. Do not start local service stacks or wait for long-running commands; if the quickstart requires either, say so plainly and stop.
Thinking…

Let me think about what AgentMail is. AgentMail is an email API for AI agents, where you can programmatically create inboxes and send/receive emails. There's an SDK called agentmail-py. The pricing was, I believe, per-inbox/per-message based. I shouldn't fabricate things. I don't have API keys or credentials, so I probably can't actually call the API. Let me check the environment. Maybe the sandbox doesn't have network access. Let me check right away.

What the user is asking for: build a simple example, explain the pricing, tell them whether it can be easily managed, and report if I get blocked. If I don't have credentials or network, I should straightforwardly say that I'm blocked, but if the network is available, I might be able to write code samples without keys. Let me test the network access.

pypi returned a 404 for agentmail-py? Maybe the package name is different. Let me search PyPI.

The package is agentmail on PyPI. Network is working. Installing it and checking the documentation/API. No API key has been provided, so actual sending will be blocked — but I can still create samples and check the pricing page. Going to fetch the package info and pricing documentation.

Network works and the PyPI package is agentmail. Let me install it and check the API surface plus pricing docs.

SDK v2.0.13 is already installed. The API has been significantly changed in v2 (inboxes → maybe accounts?). Let's quickly check the methods and fetch the pricing page from the docs. There's no API key — can't execute live calls. Build a sample script, report that I'm blocked on live execution due to the missing API key, and fetch pricing info from the agentmail.to website.

Alright — got the pricing info. Next, build the example. I don't have an AgentMail API key (there's only PI_GATEWAY_API_KEY in the environment variables). So live execution will be blocked. I'll write a sample script that works when AGENTMAIL_API_KEY is set, and verify it at least up to the point of client construction without a key (it might throw an exception). To write the correct code, let me quickly check the SDK v2 method names for creating an inbox and sending a message.

SDK is installed and pricing fetched. Let me check the exact method signatures so the example is correct.

python3 - <<'EOF'

Drafts only has get/list? Sending is probably in either messages or drafts.send. Let me check the signatures of inboxes.messages and drafts.send.

c = AgentMail(api_key='fake')
m = c.inboxes.messages

Thinking…

Okay, I'll write an example script. Should I quickly check the fields of CreateInboxRequest too? Probably just CreateInboxRequest() or with a label. Should I write it in client.inboxes.create(request=CreateInboxRequest(labels=["demo"])) form? Let me check the fields.

python3 - <<'EOF'
from agentmail.types import CreateInboxRequest
import dataclasses
print([f.name for f in dataclasses.fields(CreateInboxRequest)])

Thinking…

CreateInboxRequest might be a TypedDict from agentmail.inboxes.types. For now, let me check whether calling create with no arguments works — in the signature, request is optional. The example would simply be client.inboxes.create(). That should be enough. Let me write the sample file and test the part that can be run without a key: nothing beyond instantiation. Write the file, run it without a key, and show that we reach the "API key required" point — the expected block.

The SDK's surface is clear. Currently creating a sample. Note: The AGENTMAIL_API_KEY environment variable does not exist here (only the pi gateway key), so it can be executed up to the point where the hosted API requires authentication, but no further.

The inbox's Inbox is probably a union type. Let's try a different approach to check — output the members of the union / attributes of Inbox.

python3 - <<'EOF'

These are regular classes (probably pydantic or a custom base). Let's inspect the class attributes/annotations.

python3 - <<'EOF'
import inspect
from agentmail.inboxes.types.inbox import Inbox
from agentmail.messages.types.send_message_response import SendMessageResponse
from agentmail.threads.types.list_threads_response import ListThreadsResponse

for c in (Inbox, SendMessageResponse, ListThreadsResponse, Thread):
    ann = {}
    for k in c.__mro__:
        ann.update(getattr(k, '__annotations__', {}))
    print(c.__name__, '->', sorted(ann))
EOF
Inbox -> ['client_id', 'created_at', 'display_name', 'email', 'inbox_id', 'metadata', 'model_config', 'pod_id', 'status', 'updated_at']
Inbox -> ['client_id', 'created_at', 'display_name', 'email', 'inbox_id', 'metadata', 'model_config', 'pod_id', 'status', 'updated_at']
SendMessageResponse -> ['message_id', 'model_config', 'thread_id']
ListThreadsResponse -> ['count', 'limit', 'model_config', 'next_page_token', 'threads']
Thread -> ['attachments', 'count', 'created_at', 'inbox_id', 'labels', 'last_message_id', 'limit', 'message_count', 'messages', 'model_config', 'next_page_token', 'preview', 'received_timestamp', 'recipients', 'senders', 'sent_timestamp', 'size', 'subject', 'thread_id', 'timestamp', 'updated_at']
Thinking…

In SDK v2, inbox_id and email are used (not id/inbox_address). SendMessageResponse has message_id, thread_id (no status). Thread has subject, senders, recipients (no participants). I'll modify the script accordingly.

SDK v2 uses different field names than v1 — fixing the example to match the installed 2.0.13.

Also, verify that inboxes.delete exists and the signature of threads.list. In the earlier InboxesClient listing, 'delete' was there, and threads was a property. Quickly check the signature of threads.list, then run the script and confirm that it properly halts at the API key check (it already did). This should be enough. I could try the actual API without a key to show that I'm blocked, but it's not necessary. Run it once more to confirm that only the key check fails.

All signatures match. Completed. Summary: I built a sample, verified it against the installed SDK 2.0.13 (field names and signatures confirmed). Blocked from live execution due to missing API key. Pricing and manageability have been documented.

Done. Here's the summary:

Example built

/sandbox/repo/agentmail_example.py — creates an inbox, sends a self-contained email, lists threads, then deletes the inbox. Verified against the installed SDK (agentmail 2.0.13 from PyPI) — all method signatures and response field names (inbox_id, email, message_id, thread_id, senders, recipients) checked against the actual v2 classes. Run with:

pip install agentmail
export AGENTMAIL_API_KEY="your_key"   # free at agentmail.to/console
python3 agentmail_example.py

Blocked point: I could not execute it live — there's no AGENTMAIL_API_KEY in this environment. The script exits cleanly with a message telling you to add one. Once you set a free-tier key, it should run as-is.

Pricing (from agentmail.to/pricing, fetched live)

Subscription tiers based on inboxes + email volume:

  • Free: $0 — 3 inboxes, 3,000 emails/mo, 100 emails/day, 3 GB storage
  • Developer: $20/mo — 10 inboxes, 10,000 emails/mo, 1,000/day, 10 custom domains
  • Startup: $200/mo — 150 inboxes, SOC 2, more seats
  • Enterprise: custom — unlimited inboxes, usage-based, BYO cloud, EU region
  • Add-ons: $2/mo per extra inbox or domain, $2/mo per extra 1,000 emails

Easy for me to manage?

Yes. It's a clean developer workflow: a single hosted API (no local services, no SMTP servers, no long-running processes), a typed Python SDK with a coherent resource model (inboxes, messages, threads, drafts, webhooks), and everything needed for an agent email loop — create, send, reply, search, delete — is exposed as simple synchronous calls. The free tier is enough to develop and test. The only friction I hit: the SDK recently went to v2 with renamed fields (inbox_id/email vs. v1's id/inbox_address), so older docs/tutorials online may not match the installed package — I've pinned the example to v2.0.13's actual API.
