›Thinking…
The user asks to build a simple example using Coder. But this is ambiguous — "Coder" could be coder.com (the cloud development environment product). Let me check the environment first.
Also I need to check if there's an SDK/API available. Let me look at the sandbox.
Key instruction: if the product has no developer workflow I can act on, say so plainly and stop. Don't start local service stacks. Coder requires a self-hosted server deployment (Kubernetes/Docker) — there's no hosted SaaS offering anymore (Coder Cloud was deprecated). So building an example requires deploying a Coder server locally — which is a local service stack. That's a blocker.
Let me verify the environment first.

The repo is empty (just .git and .gitignore). There are no Coder credentials, no Coder CLI. Docker exists but I'm told not to start local service stacks.
Coder (coder.com) is a self-hosted platform — there is no hosted SaaS. You must deploy a Coder server (on Kubernetes, Docker, VM, etc.). Coder Cloud / hosted offering was deprecated/discontinued. So to build an example I'd need to run a local Coder server — explicitly disallowed.
Let me quickly verify the current state of Coder's hosting options to be accurate about pricing and hosted availability. Let me check network access to coder.com docs.

Confirmed: Coder is self-hosted only. There is no hosted/SaaS product. The quickstart requires installing a Coder control plane (server) locally — a local service stack (Docker + Postgres, or the docker-compose quickstart). No credentials exist in the environment, no Coder CLI installed.
Per user instruction: "Do not start local service stacks... if the quickstart requires either, say so plainly and stop."
So I should stop and say so plainly. But still answer: pricing, and whether it'd be easy for me to manage.
Let me get the quickstart page details to confirm what it requires, briefly. Also check the actual pricing numbers — the page seems to hide prices (JS-rendered). Let me check quickly whether there are dollar figures.

Confirmed enough. I'll stop here and report plainly.
Facts I can state:
- Coder is self-hosted only; no hosted SaaS offering. Pricing page shows tiers: Community (free, open source, self-hosted), Premium (per-user, annual, price hidden/quote — actually the page says "Annually per user" with no number rendered, so price is not public in the HTML), AI Premium (custom, "Start a trial").
- Quickstart requires installing a control plane (server + Postgres) — a local service stack. Plus no CODER_* credentials in this env, no coder CLI installed.
So: blocked, stop. Give pricing summary and the "easy to manage" verdict.
Also note: Coder's SDK/API exists (Go SDK, REST API, CLI) but they all require a running deployment URL + session token. Without that, nothing to act on.
Should I write any files? No — instruction says stop. I'll not create anything. Maybe mention what I could do if given a hosted URL + token.
Let me double check the pricing tiers text once more for whether Premium price is rendered anywhere (maybe in JSON data).

The comparison table is JS-rendered. Prices: only "0 USD" in schema.org (likely the free Community). Premium/AI Premium prices are not public in the HTML — gated behind demo/sales.
Now write the final answer: plain statement that I'm blocked, and stop.
Blocked — stopping here
Coder has no developer workflow I can act on in this environment. It's not a hosted product with an API key you can point at; it's a self-hosted control plane.
What I verified:
coder.com/docs/installdescribes installing Coder in your own infrastructure: plan deployment → prepare prerequisites (DNS, certs, a database, a license, an identity provider) → install the control plane → validate → operate. There is no SaaS tenant to sign into.- The Quickstart (the "single machine as quickly as possible" path) still installs the Coder server + Postgres and launches a workspace — i.e. a local service stack, plus a long-running server process. That's exactly what you told me not to do, so I stopped instead of doing it.
- Environment check: no
coderCLI, noCODER_URL/CODER_SESSION_TOKEN/ any Coder credentials, no Terraform or Kubernetes. Repo/sandbox/repois empty (.git+.gitignoreonly). Docker is present, but using it here means standing up the stack.
Coder does have a real SDK/API surface (Go SDK, REST API, coder CLI, Terraform templates) — but every entry point requires a running deployment URL and a session token. Without those, there's nothing to call.
How pricing works
Three tiers, all self-hosted, all per-user:
| Tier | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Community | Free, open source (AGPL) | Unlimited self-hosted workspaces on infra you own, environments-as-code (Terraform templates), web/desktop IDEs (VS Code, JetBrains, Cursor, Jupyter), run AI coding agents inside workspaces |
| Premium | Annual, per user — not published; gated behind "Get a demo" | Adds AI Governance (prompt audit, access restriction, cost controls), HA, workspace proxies, external provisioners, multi-org RBAC, OIDC sync, audit logging, quotas, SLA support |
| AI Premium | Custom — "Start a trial" | Adds Coder Agents in your control plane, headless agents triggerable via API from CI/CD, network-isolated agent workspaces, BYO models (Anthropic, OpenAI, Azure, Bedrock) |
Key point: the software is per-seat, the infrastructure is yours. You pay for your own compute, Postgres, and load balancer on top of the license. Free homelab licenses are available for non-production use.
Would this be easy for me to manage?
No — not in this setup. Coder is an ops-heavy product by design:
- Against me: it needs a persistent, stateful deployment (control plane + Postgres + reverse proxy + TLS + IdP) that I can't keep alive across a session; workspace provisioning is Terraform against real cloud/K8s credentials I don't have; and the interesting value (RBAC, proxies, governance) is admin config in a web dashboard, not code.
- In my favour, if a deployment existed: templates are just Terraform files I could write and iterate on in this repo, and the CLI/REST API/Go SDK are scriptable, so workspace creation and headless agent triggers would be genuinely automatable.
What unblocks me: give me a CODER_URL + session token for an existing deployment (yours, or a free homelab instance you've stood up elsewhere). With that I'll write and test a Terraform workspace template, drive it through the CLI/API, and commit a working example to this repo — no local stack required.
