Agents need your login

Docs and quickstart are clear, but pricing is quote-only.

Setup, SQL, and API/MCP docs are complete and actionable. The pricing page names per-CPU and license-term models but gives no actual numbers, only "contact us."

3 fixes to start with

Concrete changes, backed by what we found.

Onboarding

Give agents a clear login handoff and a way to resume setup.

Agents cannot progress through onboarding without human help. Provide an agent-accessible path through authentication and setup.

Docs

Publish prices alongside the sales contact.

Pricing page states licensing models but no actual prices; only 'contact us for a quote'.

Docs

State what each price includes and how overages are billed.

Pricing page names per-CPU billing but gives no units, tiers, or limits.

Help me build a simple example using Ocient Documentation. Tell me how pricing works, and briefly tell me whether this product will be easy for you to manage. Let me know if you get blocked. If this product has no developer workflow you can act on, say so plainly and stop. Stay light: use the hosted product through its SDK or API. Do not start local service stacks or wait for long-running commands; if the quickstart requires either, say so plainly and stop.

Ocient's own docs site is unreachable (DNS blocked). But there's a JDBC driver on Maven Central probably, and a GitHub repo. Let me check if I can fetch docs from GitHub (e.g., ocient_jdbc README) and Maven Central.

Ocient is a geospatial analytics database (SQL engine, "Ocient" — hyperscale geospatial SQL). It's typically deployed via Docker image (ocient/hypersql) or on-prem/cloud. That means it's a self-hosted product, not a hosted product with an API. The user asked: stay light, use hosted product through SDK/API; if quickstart requires local service stacks, say so plainly and stop.

Let me verify: Ocient Hypersql — quickstart requires running docker container ocient/hypersql:latest and connecting via JDBC/SQLAlchemy. Let me check GitHub readme to confirm, and check pypi for "sqlalchemy-ocient" or maven central for com.ocient.

Let me check quickly.

sqlalchemy-ocient exists on PyPI. But the user asked to use the hosted product through SDK/API. Ocient is a self-hosted/deployed database (Docker image ocient/hypersql, or Ocient-managed cloud instances requiring enterprise contract). Also no free tier/sign-up for hosted API.

Let me check pypi sqlalchemy-ocient details and whether there's a documented quickstart requiring docker. Also check the docs site via alternate DNS? DNS resolution blocked for ocient.io. Let me try resolving via a public DNS-over-HTTPS (Cloudflare DoH) — but likely outbound is restricted to allowlist hosts. Let's test.

# Ocient Data Intelligence Platform Dialect for SQLAlchemy

The Ocient Data Intelligence Platform Python API extension gives application developers the full power and flexibility of SQLAlchemy.

## Installation

Install the sqlalchemy-ocient package.

```shell
pip install sqlalchemy-ocient
```

## SQLAlchemy URI

The Ocient DSN is of the format:
```shell
ocient://user:password@[host][:port][/database][?param1=value1&...]
```

## Testing

pytest tests can be run using

```
python -m sqlalchemy_ocient.tests
```

All pytest and sqlalchemy test arguments can be provided. By default
the tests will run against the URI `ocient://admin@system:admin@localhost/test`
however they can be run against other datbase URIs using the `--dburi` argument

Thinking…

Interesting: ocient.io does not resolve (NXDOMAIN — Status 3) even via public DNS. The company's site is ocient.com. Let me check ocient.com and doc.ocient.com reachability.

Also key question: is there a hosted product with a self-service API? Ocient offers "Ocient Data Intelligence Platform" — typically deployed via Docker/Kubernetes (CASA architecture, requires NVMe local storage) or Ocient-managed cloud. Let's check docs at doc.ocient.com.

docs.ocient.com works. Let's fetch docs structure — check quickstart, pricing, deployment options, whether there's a hosted/cloud offering with API keys.

Docs are available (Mintlify, llms.txt / llms-full.txt). Now: does Ocient have a hosted product I can use via SDK/API without running a local stack? Key: "ocient-simulator" page — an Ocient Simulator! That might be a hosted way to try. Let's read llms.txt fully and the simulator page, connect-to-ocient, and check for pricing (likely on ocient.com). Also check for cloud/managed offering.

# Ocient Simulator

> Use the Ocient Simulator to test queries, validate schemas, and prototype data pipelines in a lightweight local environment before deploying to production.

Ocient® provides a simulated database system upon request for development or local workloads with no performance requirements.

This simulator system is a lightweight package that emulates a complete Ocient System with these features:

* SQL port for connection using any of the supported connectors from Ocient.
* No NVMe drive or Linux® huge page requirements.

> [!NOTE]
>
> To request access to an Ocient simulator, contact Ocient Support.

## Prerequisites

The Ocient simulator has these hardware and software requirements:

**Hardware**

* 64GB system RAM
* 64-bit Intel® architecture CPU (x86)
* Allocated disk storage equal to twice the size of the data to load.

> [!NOTE]
>
> If you run the Ocient Simulator on a virtual machine, you must configure your virtual machine CPU to support AVX2 instructions by setting the CPU type to `host`.

**Software**

* Docker® [Engine](https://www.docker.com/get-started/) version 20.10.10 or greater with [Docker Compose](https://docs.docker.com/compose/) version 1.9.0 or greater.

## Install the Ocient Simulator

Ocient distributes its simulator as the tarball `simulator_archive.tar`. Upon receiving the file, you can extract it and load the container images into the Docker daemon with the provided `load_all_images.sh` file.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Some file names might differ based on the simulator release version.

**Step 1**

From a terminal window, create a new empty directory.

```shell Shell theme={null}
mkdir simulator_workspace
```

And then change the directory to the new one.

```shell Shell theme={null}
cd simulator_workspace
```

**Step 2**

Copy or move the tarball file into the new directory.

**Step 3**

Extract the file.

```shell Shell theme={null}
tar xf simulator_archive.tar
```

The simulator package contains these files.

| **File Name** | **Description** |
| - | - |
| `configure.sql` | The system configuration script that bootstraps the simulator. |
| `docker-compose.yml` | The [Docker Compose file](https://docs.docker.com/compose/compose-application-model/) that defines the containers that constitute the simulator system. |
| `lat_client.tar`, `lat_simulator.tar`, `ocient_jdbc_image.tar`, `rolehostd_simulator.tar` | These Docker images comprise various components of the Ocient System. |
| `jdbc.sh` | The JDBC CLI launch script for connection to the SQL interface of the simulator. |
| `lat_client.sh` | The Loading and Transformation (LAT) client launch script. The LAT client is for backward compatibility. |
| `load_all_images.sh` | This script loads all the tarball files into the Docker daemon. |

**Step 4**

Load the Ocient System tarball files for the simulator.

```shell Shell theme={null}
./load_all_images.sh
```

> [!NOTE]
>
> If you do not have access privileges to the Docker daemon, you might receive the `Permission denied` error when you run `docker` commands. Use `sudo` or add your user to the Docker group.

This output shows a successful load operation. The exact output of your simulator might differ depending on what version you download.

### Start and Configure the Cluster

Each Ocient simulator consists of a series of nodes running in their own Docker containers. The `docker compose` command enables networking, general administration, and orchestration of these nodes.

> [!NOTE]
>
> The commands you use based on this section might differ with your Docker version.
>
> These steps use the `docker compose` command for the simulator setup. If you are using an older version of Docker with `docker-compose` (a dash instead of a space), use that instead.

**Step 1**

Start the cluster using the `docker compose` command.

```shell Shell theme={null}
docker compose up -d
```

The cluster startup displays output that is similar to this output.

```shell Shell theme={null}
[+] Running 7/7
 ⠿ Network simulator_workspace_ocientdbnet      Created                    0.1s
 ⠿ Container simulator_workspace-sql-1          Started                   20.2s
 ⠿ Container simulator_workspace-foundation0-1  Started                   15.4s
 ⠿ Container simulator_workspace-foundation2-1  Started                   17.4s
 ⠿ Container simulator_workspace-foundation1-1  Started                   16.4s
 ⠿ Container simulator_workspace-loader-1       Started                   14.4s
 ⠿ Container simulator_workspace-lat-1          Started                    7.1s
```

> [!NOTE]
>
> Ensure that you run every command from the same directory where you extracted the `simulator_archive.tar.gz` archive.

**Step 2**

Using the bundled JDBC CLI, connect to the cluster and execute the contents of the `configure.sql` file that is distributed with the simulator.

The JDBC CLI is bundled with the simulator as the `jdbc.sh` script. Execute this script with no arguments after starting the cluster.

```shell Shell theme={null}
./jdbc.sh
```

> [!NOTE]
>
> After loading the JDBC CLI, the system prompts you to enter a username and password. The default simulator username and password are `admin@system` and `admin`.
>
> You can also pass these credentials later in a CONNECT statement, for example:
>
> `CONNECT TO jdbc:ocient://sql:4050/system USER admin@system USING admin;`

The interface switches to the JDBC CLI interactive mode, as indicated by the `Ocient>` prompt. Execute the configuration file.

```shell JDBC CLI theme={null}
source configure.sql;
```

The configuration displays output similar to this.

```shell Shell theme={null}
Connected to jdbc:ocient://sql:4050/system
Modified 0 rows
Modified 0 rows
Modified 0 rows
Warning: Node must be restarted for changes to take effect (the streamloader role has been added to the configuration, but the streamloader is not yet active on the node. To have this change take effect, a restart of the streamloader and foundation nodes is required)
Modified 0 rows
Modified 0 rows
Modified 0 rows
```

**Step 3**

After completing its modifications, the simulator warns that it needs to restart for the changes to take effect. Quit the interactive mode.

```shell JDBC CLI theme={null}
quit
```

Restart the cluster.

```shell Shell theme={null}
docker compose restart
```

Thinking…

This confirms: Ocient has no hosted/self-service cloud product. To use it you must run a Docker Compose simulator stack (requires requesting access from Ocient Support, 64GB RAM) or install on-prem/AWS/GCP. There is an HTTP Query API and MCP server but they run against your own deployed Ocient System.

Let me check a few things quickly to be thorough:

  1. Is there a hosted/managed cloud offering (Ocient Cloud)? Check ocient.com pricing page.
  2. Pricing: likely not published — enterprise/custom pricing. Let's fetch ocient.com pricing page.
  3. Check HTTP Query API docs and pyocient availability on PyPI (pyocient 404 earlier — check "pyocient" name).

Let me do those checks.

cd /tmp && for u in https://www.ocient.com/pricing https://www.ocient.com/products https://www.ocient.com/cloud; do echo "== $u"; curl -sSL -m 20 -o p.html -w "%{http_code}\n" "$u"; python3 - <<'EOF'

# Ocient HTTP Query API

> The Ocient HTTP Query API lets you execute SQL statements over REST. The API follows the OpenAPI Specification (Swagger) for tooling and client generation.

The OcientAIQ™ Unified Data Platform provides an HTTP Query API that enables the execution of SQL statements. This page uses command-line examples using `curl`.

The HTTP Query API returns data in JSON format by default. The default header value is `Accept: application/json`.

### API Documentation

The API follows OpenAPI Specification (Swagger®) guidelines, which you can access in these formats from any SQL Node address `{sql_node_address}`:

* YAML format: `/openapi.yaml` endpoint
* JSON format: `/openapi.json` endpoint

**YAML Download Example**

```curl CURL theme={null}
curl https://{sql_node_address}/openapi.yaml
```

**JSON Download Example**

```curl CURL theme={null}
curl https://{sql_node_address}/openapi.json
```

You can use these specifications with various OpenAPI tools for code generation, testing, and documentation.

### Connection Setup

The connectivity pool defines connection settings for SQL Nodes, including their open port and address. For details, see [CONNECTIVITY POOL](/cluster-and-node-management#connectivity-pool).

A standard production install enables the OpenAPI port by default. At bootstrap, the system creates a default `system` connectivity pool and sets the `openapi_port` value of each participant to `443 + node port offset`. This setting mirrors the offset that the SQL port (`4050`) and REST port (`9090`) already apply. You do not need to configure anything to reach the HTTP Query API or web UI on a fresh cluster.

> [!NOTE]
>
> All the examples assume that the `openapi_port` is the standard SSL port `443`. If your connectivity pool `openapi_port` has a different port setting, you must specify it in the request URL. For example, this URL specifies using port `8443`: `https://sql_node_address:8443/v1/execute/`.

Because `443` is a privileged port, the system applies this default value only when the `rolehostd` process runs as `root` or has the `CAP_NET_BIND_SERVICE` capability. Otherwise, the `openapi_port` remains unset, and you must configure it manually using this SQL statement.

**Enable or Change the OpenAPI Port**

To open a port on a participant that does not already have one, or to change the port from its default, execute this [ALTER CONNECTIVITY POOL](/cluster-and-node-management#alter-connectivity_pool) SQL statement. Change the connectivity pool and node values in the example according to your system.

```sql SQL theme={null}
ALTER CONNECTIVITY_POOL benchmark_sql_connectivity_pool
    ALTER PARTICIPANT "benchmark-sql0" SET openapi_port 443;
```

#### Check Port Configuration

Verify your port configuration by executing this query.

```sql SQL theme={null}
SELECT c.name, n.name, openapi_port
    FROM sys.connectivity_pool_participants AS cp
    LEFT JOIN sys.connectivity_pools AS c ON cp.id = c.id
    LEFT JOIN sys.nodes AS n ON cp.node_id = n.id;
```

The output displays all configured connectivity pools with their associated nodes and OpenAPI ports.

#### SSL Certificate Setup

The Ocient® HTTP Query API supports two options for handling SSL certificates.

**Secure Connection Using TLS**

You can use your own certificates for TLS-secured connections by configuring certificate files in your Ocient install. For details, see [Secure Connections Using TLS](/secure-connections-using-tls).

**Unsecured Connection**

For quick testing or in non-production environments, you can bypass certificate validation by adding the `-k` or `--insecure` flag to your curl command.

**Example**

```sql SQL theme={null}
curl -k -u 'admin@system:admin' https://<sql-node-address>/v1/execute/system \
    -d '{"statement":"SELECT * FROM sys.dummy2;","format":"collection"}'
```

#### Authentication Methods

The Ocient HTTP Query API accepts user credentials in various formats designed for different use cases.

**Simple API Requests**

For simple queries, you can include user credentials in the request.

In this example, the request includes credentials after the `-u` flag.

```curl CURL theme={null}
curl -u 'admin@system:admin' https://sql_node/v1/execute/system \
    -d '{"statement":"SELECT * FROM sys.dummy2;", "format": "collection"}'
```
Thinking…

The pricing page HTML parse gave nothing at 'Pricing Pricing'. Let me search the pricing page text more broadly for words like "contact", "subscription", "per node", "annual".

Also confirm: no self-service hosted product. Check deployment options page for OcientCloud — is it a managed service? Let's fetch ocient.com/cloud content and deployment-options page.

OcientAIQ™ Pricing
Petabyte-scale agentic AI shouldn't require a petabyte-scale budget.
OcientAIQ™ was engineered from the ground up to maximize performance and minimize cost so organizations running the most demanding AI and analytics workloads get trusted, production-grade results at predictably lower infrastructure spend. Most organizations switching to OcientAIQ from conventional architectures see a 60–80% reduction in total infrastructure cost with equivalent or greater performance.

Controlled costs. Predictable spend.
Conventional data platforms weren’t built to serve 24/7 always-on AI and analytics workloads at petabyte scale. As data volumes grow, agent concurrency increases, and more teams need access to the same governed data, costs on traditional architectures spiral, inhibiting the AI programs their organizations are trying to run.
OcientAIQ is engineered differently. The same architectural decisions that make OcientAIQ faster and more reliable also make it dramatically more cost-efficient – delivering up to 90% less energy and infrastructure footprint than conventional architectures, and up to 80% lower total cost of ownership at production scale.
Predictable
Say goodbye to surprise superbills and rely on consistent charges based on the number of processors (CPUs) you need to power your workloads. No need to manage costs by terabyte loaded, terabyte queried, or query volume. Instead, align spend to business outcomes—not infrastructure line items.
Affordable
Maximum efficiency on standard hardware and cloud instances delivers maximum savings for your business requirements and use case.
Always-on
Stop compromising queries and downsampling data to avoid growing usage charges. Get always-on agentic AI and analytics while saving up to 80% on costs.

Thinking…

Confirmed: pricing is sales-quoted (CPU-based subscription/term license, perpetual, bundled). No public pricing, no self-service signup, no free tier/API key. All access paths require either OcientCloud (contract), public cloud install (your own infra), on-prem install, or the Simulator (tarball on request from Ocient Support, Docker Compose stack, 64GB RAM).

So per the user's instruction: the quickstart requires a local service stack (Docker Compose simulator) and there is no hosted self-service product → say so plainly and stop.

But should I do nothing? The instruction says "If this product has no developer workflow you can act on, say so plainly and stop." There IS a developer workflow (docs, pyocient, HTTP Query API) but it requires a running Ocient System which I can't provision. The instruction: "Do not start local service stacks or wait for long-running commands; if the quickstart requires either, say so plainly and stop."

The quickstart does require a local stack (Docker Compose simulator) which also requires obtaining a tarball from Ocient Support. So I should stop. I should not build the example. But I could optionally leave nothing. I'll be honest and stop, giving pricing info and manageability assessment.

Let me also quickly check pyocient on PyPI to note that the SDK exists (client-side only) — useful detail. And check install-an-ocient-system requires hardware. I have enough. Let me quickly grab pyocient version info for accuracy, and confirm no docker in sandbox anyway.

# Connect to Ocient

> Connect client applications to an Ocient SQL Node using JDBC, pyocient, or REST on the default port 4050 with automatic load balancing across nodes.

You can connect to any of the SQL Nodes in an Ocient® System to execute queries or commands. The SQL Node is available by default on port `4050` at the IP address or hostname assigned to the SQL Nodes. When more than one SQL Node is present in the Ocient System, Ocient automatically loads balance connections between the nodes to even out the load across connections.

Ocient provides a JDBC driver and a Python® driver named `pyocient`. You can use any of these drivers to connect to an online Ocient System.

To connect from a client computer that can access the SQL Node using the network, follow any of the following examples. Note that you must have the IP address of the SQL Node and a valid username and password to connect.

* [Connect Using JDBC](/connect-using-jdbc)
* [Connect Using pyocient](/connect-using-pyocient)

> [!NOTE]
>
> If you are unable to connect, check the logs on the SQL Nodes for issues or check the [Errors and Warnings](/errors-and-warnings) for more detail on error codes.

For supported third-party tools, see [Ocient Integrations](/ocient-integrations).
Thinking…

Confirmed. Stopping. I did not build an example. Let me write my answer: plainly state blocked, why, pricing, manageability.

Should I write anything to the repo? The user said stay light and stop. I'll not create files. Maybe I should give a small note. Keep concise.

One caveat: docker exists but sandbox has 7GB RAM vs 64GB requirement, and the simulator tarball is gated behind Support. Also no docker daemon likely. Fine.

Answer concisely.

Blocked — stopping here

I read the docs (https://docs.ocient.com, including llms.txt) but I did not build an example, because there is no path that satisfies your constraints.

Why: Ocient is a distributed database (OcientAIQ / Ocient System), not a hosted API product with self-service signup. Every documented way to get a running system requires infrastructure I can't act on:

PathRequirement
Ocient Simulator (the official "lightweight dev environment")Tarball by request from Ocient Support + Docker Compose multi-container stack (sql, 3× foundation, loader, lat) + 64 GB RAM, x86 AVX2. This sandbox has 7 GB.
On-prem / AWS / GCP installMulti-node cluster: Foundation/SQL/Loader nodes, NVMe, huge pages, bootstrapping, storage spaces
OcientCloud® (managed)Sales engagement — no signup, no API key, no free tier

The client SDKs are real and pip-installable (pyocient 3.9.0, sqlalchemy-ocient 3.0.0, JDBC driver, HTTP Query API at /v1/execute/<db>, MCP Server), but they are clients only — every one needs a SQL Node at host:4050 / OpenAPI port 443 plus credentials (admin@system / admin on a simulator). Nothing reachable exists, so any example I wrote would be untested fiction. Per your instruction ("if the quickstart requires a local service stack, say so plainly and stop"), I stopped. I created no files in /sandbox/repo.

How pricing works (from ocient.com/pricing — no published rates, quote-based):

  • Metered by CPU/processor count, not by TB loaded, TB scanned, or query volume. Explicitly "no pay-by-compute surprises."
  • Three licensing models: subscription/term license (annual or multi-year; longer terms = lower fees; cloud, on-prem, hybrid), perpetual license (on-prem on Ocient-certified hardware + annual support/upgrade contract), and bundled AI solutions (hardware + software + support + managed services at one price).
  • Marketing claims: 60–80% lower infrastructure cost and up to 80% lower TCO vs. conventional architectures. Entry is "contact us for a quote" / free cost-savings analysis. Enterprise-only; no self-serve tier.

Will this be easy for me to manage? No.

  • Provisioning: gated behind a support request or a sales contract — I can't obtain credentials autonomously.
  • Operations: the docs are dominated by hardware/ops work — NVMe firmware upgrades, drive replacement, segment rebuilds, node bootstrapping, storage-space parity, rolling upgrades, huge pages, NUMA tuning. That's a DBA/platform-team surface, not an agent-friendly one.
  • Versioning: explicit client/server version-compatibility matrix to maintain (pyocient, JDBC, LAT must match the server).
  • What would be easy once a system exists: the dev-facing parts are genuinely good — pyocient is a standard DBAPI driver, SQLAlchemy dialect exists, the HTTP Query API is OpenAPI-specified (/openapi.json → codegen), docs are Mintlify with llms.txt/llms-full.txt and every page has a .md endpoint, and there's an MCP Server for agent access. So the workflow is agent-friendly after someone hands me a live endpoint; getting that endpoint is the hard, human-gated part.

To unblock: give me a reachable Ocient SQL Node (host:4050 or OpenAPI URL) + username/password, or point me at an alternative with self-service hosted access.
