Help me build a simple example using Fireworks AI. Tell me how pricing works, and briefly tell me whether this product will be easy for you to manage. Let me know if you get blocked. If this product has no developer workflow you can act on, say so plainly and stop. Stay light: use the hosted product through its SDK or API. Do not start local service stacks or wait for long-running commands; if the quickstart requires either, say so plainly and stop.

The user is looking for a simple example that uses Fireworks AI. Let me check whether an API key exists, and what the sandbox looks like.

ls /sandbox/repo; env | grep -i -E 'fireworks|fw_|api' | sed 's/=.\{6\}.*/=***REDACTED***/'; which python3 node curl

The Fireworks API key doesn't exist. Should I check the environment variables a bit more thoroughly? Only the PI gateway key is available. Without the FIREWORKS_API_KEY, I can't make actual calls to Fireworks. I should build a sample and explain the pricing, and point out that I'm blocked on the key. Let me check whether there's a .env or config file somewhere in the repo.

Interesting — this environment is using Fireworks through the gateway. The model is accounts/fireworks/models/qwen3p8-max, and PI_GATEWAY_API_KEY and PI_PROVIDER=gauge-fireworks are set. However, FIREWORKS_API_KEY is not directly set. The gateway key might be usable against the Fireworks API? It's unclear. Let me check if I can install the fireworks-ai SDK and try calling the Fireworks API using the gateway key... that's risky. Let me check the gateway URL configuration.

Thinking…

PI_GATEWAY_API_KEY is "unused" — meaning it's not a real key. There's no FIREWORKS_API_KEY. So I can't make live calls to Fireworks. But wait — maybe a gateway exists (ALG_INFERENCE_*). Let me check for the gateway's base URL environment variable... there's NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS for alg-gateway, but no base URL variable to be found. It's possible the gateway is proxying Fireworks. But since the key is "unused", maybe the gateway doesn't require authentication. However, I shouldn't be messing around with the harness's internal gateway — that's the pi inference gateway, not something intended for user code.

Plan: Create a sample file that uses the Fireworks AI hosted API (both curl/OpenAI-compatible and the fireworks-ai SDK), try installing the SDK, and report that I'm blocked without FIREWORKS_API_KEY. Explain the pricing structure. Keep it lightweight.

Try pip install fireworks-ai quickly (with a timeout). Then write the sample file. Should I do a test call without a key just to demonstrate the failure? That would hit the external network, but it's fine, it'll be quick.

pip install -q fireworks-ai 2>&1 | tail -2; python3 -c "import fireworks; print('fireworks-ai SDK version:', fireworks.__version__)"
fireworks-ai SDK version: 1.2.27
fireworks-ai SDK version: 1.2.27
curl -s -o /dev/null -w '%{http_code}' --max-time 10 https://api.fireworks.ai/v1/models
404
404
Thinking…

Network can reach api.fireworks.ai. FIREWORKS_API_KEY doesn't exist (PI_GATEWAY_API_KEY is "unused" and is for the agent harness's gateway, not for Fireworks). Because of that, no actual inference calls can be made—blocked by the API key. Still, I'll write a sample file and explain.

Actually, let me try an unauthenticated request to a known endpoint to check connectivity. For example, send a fake key to chat/completions and check whether a 401 (auth error) comes back. This would prove connectivity.

curl -s --max-time 15 https://api.fireworks.ai/inference/v1/chat/completions -H 'Content-Type: application/json' -H 'Authorization: Bearer fw_invalid_test_key' -d '{"model":"accounts/fireworks/models/llama-v3p1-8b-instruct","messages":[{"role":"user","content":"hi"}]}'
(no output)
(no output)
Thinking…

Empty response? Let me check the HTTP code.

curl -s -w '\nHTTP %{http_code}\n' --max-time 15 https://api.fireworks.ai/inference/v1/chat/completions -H 'Content-Type: application/json' -H 'Authorization: Bearer fw_invalid_test_key' -d '{"model":"accounts/fireworks/models/llama-v3p1-8b-instruct","messages":[{"role":"user","content":"hi"}],"max_tokens":5}'
HTTP 403

HTTP 403
Thinking…

Connectivity confirmed (403 with an invalid key, as expected). There's no real FIREWORKS_API_KEY in the environment — this is the blocking factor. I'll write a sample file and explain the pricing structure and ease-of-use. I won't run any long-running processes. Going to create the sample.

Since the Fireworks API is reachable, a clear developer workflow (hosted REST API + SDK, no local stack) exists. Let's set up an example.

One blocker: This sandbox doesn't have FIREWORKS_API_KEY (confirmed via environment variables. Test calls correctly return 403). I'll prepare everything so it works as soon as the key is provided.

I should also provide a curl example to show how to use the API directly, run a quick dry-run to verify everything works, and then explain the pricing structure and what constitutes a blocker.

Now, the summary: pricing and manageability, plus the blocking factors. Keep it concise.

Done. Fireworks AI has a real developer workflow (hosted REST API + fireworks-ai SDK, OpenAI-compatible), so I built examples rather than stopping.

What I created in /sandbox/repo/:

  • fireworks_example.py — Python SDK example (plain + streaming chat completion, token usage). Verified via --dry-run; SDK v1.2.27 installed cleanly.
  • fireworks_curl_example.sh — raw REST variant, no SDK needed.

Blocked on one thing: there is no FIREWORKS_API_KEY in this environment. I confirmed the API endpoint is reachable (invalid-key probe returns 403 as expected), so the examples will work the moment you provide a key from https://fireworks.ai/account/api-keys:

export FIREWORKS_API_KEY=fw_xxx
python3 fireworks_example.py

I did not attempt live inference calls without a real key.

How pricing works:

  • Pay-per-token, per-model: each hosted model has its own input/output price per million tokens (roughly $0.10–$1.10/M for small models up to ~$2–$8/M for large/flagship models; check the model card on fireworks.ai for exact numbers).
  • You're billed only for tokens used; the response.usage object in the example shows input/output token counts so you can compute cost per call.
  • Separate billing exists for fine-tuning (training compute) and for dedicated/on-demand GPU deployments (per-minute rates) — neither is needed for this simple API usage.

Manageability for me: Yes, easy. It's a pure HTTP/SDK product — I can write, run, and debug examples quickly, verify via dry runs, and inspect token usage. No local service stacks, no long-running processes, nothing stateful. The only friction is credential management (the API key must come from you).
