Help me build a simple example using ScyllaDB. Tell me how pricing works, and briefly tell me whether this product will be easy for you to manage. Let me know if you get blocked. If this product has no developer workflow you can act on, say so plainly and stop. Stay light: use the hosted product through its SDK or API. Do not start local service stacks or wait for long-running commands; if the quickstart requires either, say so plainly and stop.

The user wants to build a simple example using ScyllaDB. Let me first check the repo.

Note: ScyllaDB requires running a database server (local stack) or a hosted product (ScyllaDB Cloud). Let me check the repo first and see what's available. Also, hosted ScyllaDB Cloud requires credentials, which I don't have. Let me look.

I'll start by looking at the repo and environment.

Empty repo. No ScyllaDB credentials. Let me check whether there's network access and whether ScyllaDB Cloud has a free API-accessible product. ScyllaDB Cloud requires signup with credentials — no free anonymous API. Also ScyllaDB's developer workflow requires running a cluster (docker) which the user forbade.

Let me check network access to see if cloud.scylladb.com API is reachable and whether there's any way without credentials.

Let me quickly test connectivity.

cd /sandbox/repo && git log --oneline | head -5; echo "---"; timeout 20 curl -sS -o /dev/null -w "cloud.scylladb.com:%{http_code}\n" https://cloud.scylladb.com 2>&1; timeout 20 curl -sS -o /dev/null -w "scylladb.com:%{http_code}\n" https://www.scylladb.com/pricing/ 2>&1; timeout 20 curl -sS -o /dev/null -w "pypi:%{http_code}\n" https://pypi.org/simple/ 2>&1

Thinking…

PyPI timed out? Exit code 124 means timeout hit on last command. Let me test pypi separately.

So network works for cloud.scylladb.com (200) but that's likely a login page. Let me check if ScyllaDB Cloud has an API that requires credentials. It does — the ScyllaDB Cloud API requires JWT token / login credentials. No anonymous provisioning.

Let me check the pricing page and the cloud API docs quickly. And check pypi reachability for the driver (scylla-driver / cassandra-driver).

The key question: is there a developer workflow I can act on? ScyllaDB is a database. To "use the hosted product through its SDK or API" I need a ScyllaDB Cloud account + credentials. There are none in the environment. Docker is present but starting a local stack is forbidden.

So the honest answer: I'm blocked — no credentials for the hosted product, and the only alternative (local docker cluster) is excluded by the user's constraints.

But let me verify carefully before declaring blocked. Let me check:

  1. ScyllaDB Cloud API — auth requirements.
  2. Any free/trial serverless offering that can be provisioned anonymously? ScyllaDB Cloud has a free tier but requires signup with email, and cluster creation needs auth.
  3. Alternatives: ScyllaDB has a "ScyllaDB Cloud REST API". There's also AWS Marketplace. Nothing anonymous.

Let me confirm with a couple of quick checks, and also fetch pricing info.

Also check pypi to see if I could at least install the driver — but without a cluster, an SDK example is not runnable. Still, the user asked to build a simple example; but the constraint says "use the hosted product through its SDK or API" — without credentials it can't run. I should verify pricing and then say plainly I'm blocked.

Let me do the checks.

The API endpoints returned the SPA HTML (200) — meaning /api/v1/... isn't a real REST path there; it's a SPA fallback. ScyllaDB Cloud API docs: https://cloud.docs.scylladb.com or docs.scylladb.com/cloud/cloud-rest-api.html. Let me check the actual API base and whether anonymous signup/provisioning is possible. Let's fetch the REST API docs.

Key determination: no credentials exist → can't provision a hosted cluster. Let me verify quickly that the cloud API requires auth (client ID/secret from the dashboard) — documented.

Let me fetch the docs page for the cloud API and pricing free tier details to give accurate pricing info.

Thinking…

Let me check cloud.docs.scylladb.com/stable/api.html content — to confirm auth requirements (JWT via login endpoint with username/password or client ID/secret).

I'll be brief. Then decide: blocked.

Actually, let me think about whether there IS any actionable developer workflow. The user says: "Stay light: use the hosted product through its SDK or API. Do not start local service stacks... if the quickstart requires either, say so plainly and stop."

ScyllaDB's official quickstart: run a Docker container (docker run scylladb/scylla) or use ScyllaDB Cloud (requires account + credentials). Both are unavailable/forbidden:

  • No ScyllaDB Cloud credentials in env.
  • Signup requires email/interactive registration + possibly payment info; cannot be automated anonymously.
  • Local docker cluster = forbidden.

So the honest answer is: blocked. I should report plainly, give pricing info, and assess manageability. The user said "If this product has no developer workflow you can act on, say so plainly and stop." — This is a blocked case, not exactly "no developer workflow" (there IS one, but it needs credentials). Either way, I should stop and report.

Should I still write the example code? The user asked to build a simple example. I could write a small, ready-to-run example file that works against a hosted cluster once credentials are provided — that's useful and cheap, doesn't start any service. But the instruction says "say so plainly and stop." Writing a small non-executing script is arguably useful and doesn't violate constraints. However, "stop" means don't churn. I think providing a minimal ready-to-run script is genuinely helpful and costs little — but risk of it being untested code. I'll keep it very short: a single file with env-var-driven config, unrun (clearly labeled untested because no cluster). Actually, I think being disciplined: the instruction says stop. But providing the file makes the user's next step trivial. Hmm.

The instruction: "If this product has no developer workflow you can act on, say so plainly and stop." The product does have a workflow, but I'm blocked on credentials. "Let me know if you get blocked." So I should report blocked. I'll include a minimal example file since it's harmless and useful — but keep it tiny and clearly marked as not executed. I think that's the right balance: don't build infra, don't churn, but hand over a working-when-connected example.

Let me quickly confirm the API auth model and pricing specifics (free tier details) so my pricing summary is accurate. Let me grab the api.html text and search pricing docs for free tier.

I have enough pricing info. Now confirm the programmatic access requires a personal token created in the dashboard (authenticated) — "Create a Personal Token for Authentication". So provisioning requires a logged-in account. No credentials available.

Let me quickly check the free-tier signup requirements to state it plainly. Actually, I know: signup requires email/password (or Google/GitHub SSO) — cannot be automated without user credentials. Good enough.

Now, decision: I'm blocked. Write a small ready-to-run example? I'll keep it minimal and clearly labeled. Actually — instruction "say so plainly and stop" applies to the no-workflow case. For blocked, "let me know if you get blocked." I'll write one small file (an example script) because it's zero-cost and doesn't start services, and report blocked clearly. Hmm, but untested code might be noise. I think a tiny script driven by env vars is a reasonable deliverable and clearly marked untested. I'll do it — one file, ~30 lines.

Let me verify the driver name on PyPI is scylla-driver (yes, the Scylla shard-aware Python driver) and also cassandra-driver works. Confirm pypi 200 earlier for scylla-driver — yes.

I won't pip install (would be fine but pointless without a cluster; and it's a long-ish command). Actually installing a driver is not a "long-running command" per se, but without a cluster there's nothing to run. Skip.

Write the file.

Also write BLOCKED.md briefly. Keep it short.

Actually, keep it minimal — one BLOCKED.md.

# Blocked: ScyllaDB hosted product not reachable from this sandbox
## What I wanted to do
Run a minimal CQL example (keyspace + table + prepared writes/reads) against a
**ScyllaDB Cloud** cluster using the shard-aware Python driver (`scylla-driver`).
## Why it is blocked
ScyllaDB is a database engine, not an HTTP SaaS you can poke anonymously. There are
exactly two quickstart paths, and both are unavailable under the given constraints:
1. **ScyllaDB Cloud (hosted)** — every entry point is credential-gated:
- Console/cluster creation requires a registered account (email/password or SSO).
No account, and signup is interactive — not automatable headlessly.
- The **ScyllaDB Cloud API** (documented at `cloud.docs.scylladb.com` →
"Automate with the ScyllaDB Cloud API") authenticates with a **Personal Token**
created from a logged-in console session. No token exists here.
- Data-plane access needs the cluster's contact point, username and password,
issued only after a cluster is provisioned.
- Verified: `https://cloud.scylladb.com/api/v1/clusters` and
`/api/v1/auth/login` return the SPA shell (200), i.e. not usable public REST
endpoints without a session. No anonymous/trial provisioning path.
- Env check: no `SCYLLA*`, cloud-provider, or DB credentials present
(only `PI_GATEWAY_API_KEY`, `AWS_CA_BUNDLE`, git config).
2. **Self-hosted local cluster** (`docker run scylladb/scylla`, or the Operator on
Kubernetes) — excluded by instruction: no local service stacks, no long-running
processes. Docker is present but was not used.
Network itself is fine: `scylladb.com`, `cloud.scylladb.com`, `docs`, and PyPI all
respond, so `pip install scylla-driver` would work.
## What exists
`scylla_quickstart.py` — the example, written but **never executed** (nothing to
connect to). It is env-var driven and will run as-is once real credentials exist.
## To unblock (pick one)
- Export `SCYLLA_CONTACT_POINTS`, `SCYLLA_DATACENTER`, `SCYLLA_USERNAME`,
`SCYLLA_PASSWORD` from a ScyllaDB Cloud cluster (free Developer tier: 30-day trial
on a small instance such as AWS t3.micro), then `python scylla_quickstart.py`.
- Or export a ScyllaDB Cloud **personal API token** to allow provisioning via the
Cloud API / Terraform provider from here.
- Or lift the no-local-stack restriction, which permits a `docker run` cluster and a
fully self-contained example.

Let me quickly sanity-check the python file compiles (syntax only, no imports needed since cassandra isn't installed — py_compile works).

cd /sandbox/repo && python3 -m py_compile scylla_quickstart.py && echo "syntax OK" && ls -la

Clean up pycache and note .gitignore probably covers it. Check .gitignore.

cd /sandbox/repo && rm -rf __pycache__ && cat .gitignore | head -20

I need to look into this further. Let me confirm the details.

Blocked — stopping here

ScyllaDB Cloud is the hosted product, and every path into it is credential-gated. There are no credentials in this sandbox.

What I verified:

  • No SCYLLA*, DB, or cloud-provider credentials in the env (only PI_GATEWAY_API_KEY, AWS_CA_BUNDLE, git config).
  • cloud.scylladb.com/api/v1/clusters and /api/v1/auth/login return the React SPA shell (HTTP 200), not usable anonymous REST endpoints. The documented Cloud API ("Automate with the ScyllaDB Cloud API" at cloud.docs.scylladb.com) authenticates with a Personal Token created from a logged-in console session; cluster creation requires a registered account (interactive signup). No anonymous provisioning/trial path.
  • The other quickstart path — docker run scylladb/scylla / the Kubernetes Operator — is a local service stack, which you excluded. Docker is present; I did not use it.
  • Network and PyPI are fine, so pip install scylla-driver would work — there's just nothing to connect to.

How pricing works (from scylladb.com/pricing)

  • Billing model: transparent, provisioned-resource based (not "black-box serverless"). You pay for instance type (vCPU/RAM per node) + NVMe SSD storage used + service plan tier + deployment model (fully-managed SaaS vs BYOA), plus variable cloud network/backup costs.
  • On-Demand vs Reserved: hourly rate with no commitment, or reserved capacity at a discount for longer commitments.
  • Tiers (support/SLA bundle, not separable): Standard — 2h P1 response, business-hours support; Professional — 1h P1, 24×7, BYOA, multi-region active-active, dedicated Slack; Premium — 15-min P1, BYOE, Private Link, dedicated TAM, custom licensing. ~99.9% uptime SLA across tiers.
  • Free: 30-day Developer trial on small instances (e.g. AWS t3.micro) and a 48-hour production-instance evaluation. Both still require an account + console signup.
  • Enterprise/self-managed: separate quote ("Get a Quote"), contact sales.

Will this be easy for me to manage?

No — not from an agent sandbox. ScyllaDB Cloud's whole control plane assumes a human-authenticated console session or a pre-minted personal token. I can't self-serve an account, can't obtain a token, and can't see cluster state without one. Once you supply credentials it becomes straightforward (a stable CQL driver, one prepared-statement workload, plus a REST API/Terraform provider for infra changes) — but the bootstrap step is a hard manual gate, and ongoing work (capacity/resizing, token rotation, SLA-tier choices) is console-driven and cost-sensitive. Also worth flagging: a real ScyllaDB example is fundamentally stateful and long-lived, which sits awkwardly with "stay light."

Files written (nothing executed)

  • /sandbox/repo/scylla_quickstart.py — minimal CQL example (keyspace → table with CLUSTERING ORDER BY → prepared writes → partition-key read), fully env-var driven, syntax-checked only. Never run against a live cluster.
  • /sandbox/repo/BLOCKED.md — the blockage, the evidence, and three ways to unblock.

To unblock: export SCYLLA_CONTACT_POINTS / SCYLLA_DATACENTER / SCYLLA_USERNAME / SCYLLA_PASSWORD from a cluster (free 30-day Developer tier works), or export a Cloud API personal token so I can provision via the API/Terraform, or lift the no-local-stack rule so a docker run cluster makes this self-contained.
